Patient Advocate

Mino Care is looking for experienced Patient Advocates with a legal background — law students, articling students, licensed paralegals, or early-career lawyers — to support patients experiencing challenges within health care settings, with child protective services, or with other systems impacting their well-being.

Patient Advocates will not provide legal representation or formal legal advice. Instead, they will offer information and guidance to help patients understand their rights, potential options, and next steps.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about patient rights, social justice, and culturally safe support for Black families and other racialized communities.

Roles/Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

· Respond to patient inquiries related to: health care experiences (e.g., informed consent, patient rights, discrimination), child protective services (e.g., understanding processes, knowing rights), other social system interactions impacting maternal/reproductive health

· Help patients understand their options and potential resources without offering direct legal advice.

· Maintain accurate, confidential notes about patient inquiries and support provided.

· Identify when patients should be referred to legal representation or other specialized services.

· Provide updates on patient status to Mino Care team after meeting with them

Qualifications

·  Currently enrolled in or a graduate of a Canadian law program OR a licensed paralegal in Canada.

·  Knowledge of health law, administrative law, family law, or child welfare law is a strong asset.

·  Strong communication and active listening skills.

·  Commitment to trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and culturally safe approaches.

·  Comfortable working independently and maintaining boundaries around scope of support (informational, not advisory).

·  Experience working with Black, Indigenous, racialized, or marginalized communities is an asset.

Time Commitment: 1-5 hours a month

Pay: $50-$200/hr(Depending on experience)
